PAIN | ANXIETY |
Virtual reality to relieve pain in the emergency room, BMC Emergency Medecine, 2022
T. Birrenbach, et al.
Results: Significant decrease in pain (median pre-simulation RV NRS 4.5 (IQR 3-7) vs. median post RV simulation 3 (IQR 2-5), p<0.001), and anxiety levels (median NRS pre RV simulation 4 (IQR 2-5) vs. median post RV simulation 2 (IQR 0-3), p<0.001), resulting in moderate effect sizes (Cohen’s d estimate for pain reduction=0.59 (95% CI: 0.19-0.98), for anxiety level on NRS=0.75 (95% CI: 0.34-1.15). Testimonies
Three notable examples of use cases that the medical team has implemented: •Suturing an autistic child • Stitching the arm of a child during virtual reality •Overcoming the fear of injections (in both children and adults) through VR

We use it for sutures, dressings, and blood tests. We find that the underwater scene is more popular with children, and they love pointing out the fish they can see. It's one of the best things to have in the department, and when I'm not there as a specialist, any nurse can use it too. The fact that the tablet allows parents to see the images means that the whole family can be involved, which can be crucial in emergencies.
Patient: You don't notice the noises around. You really feel like you're in the actual place. It's relaxing.
Father: At the end of the session, I did feel she was very relaxed, and it was nice that it allowed her to have a little break from her hospital stay.
